Nigerian comedian and content creator, Brain Jotter, has reflected on his journey from earning a ₦25,000 monthly salary and struggling to survive to becoming financially successful.
Recounting his experience, the comedian said he never imagined becoming the person he is today, revealing that he was once fired from a ₦25,000-per-month job and had to survive by collecting small amounts of money from different sources.
According to him, he did not even realise how much he was struggling at the time until his financial situation began to improve a few years ago.
Brain Jotter recalled one of his earliest brand deals, saying he was shocked when he was offered ₦200,000 for an advert.
He said, “One brand reached out and it was like, ‘I want you to advertise,’ and I’m like, ‘Ah, no, I’ll go buy this one.’ So the man was like, ‘How much?’ and I’m like, ‘₦200K.’ And the man was like, ‘Okay, so what account?’”
According to him, his account was frozen when the money was sent, adding that he had never seen ₦100,000 before at the time.
He also recalled signing a one-year endorsement deal worth ₦2 million in 2019 without properly reading the contract because he was desperate for money.
“One brand came, they wanted to sign me for a year. I didn’t read the contract. They said ₦2 million. I did not read it because I was desperate for money. My hunger then was, anything with this contract, I could do. What is on the contract that I cannot do?” he said.
Brain Jotter said he received about ₦1 million as an upfront payment and immediately went to his mother’s shop, although he was initially too scared to spend much of the money because he feared the opportunity might not last.
However, he said his career grew rapidly, and within three months, he had outgrown the one-year contract and was willing to refund the money to get out of the deal.
Reflecting on his past struggles and the fear that came with suddenly having money, the comedian simply said, “Poverty is bad. Poverty is bad.”
